Weekend accomplishments

I spent the weekend getting some of the framework for the On30, around-the-room, layout built and installed in my office.
The On30 will be up near the ceiling to allow for the around-the-room setup, yet still maintain an ability to turn the room back to a bedroom if necessary.

This level is mostly to show off the On30 equipment, rather than a detailed layout like the lower, HO scale, layout will be. It will also allow for continuous running of either the On30 or HO scale equipment.
The On30 level will be mostly a 6" wide shelf, widening to a 15" wide shelf where the layout is above the HO scale portion (so the two levels will match).

I won't imbed the pics as they are rather large, but have the following links to them:

Looks great, I always envy folks who can devote a room to trains...only get a little greener when they can do two levels.:thumb:

Almost finished. Only have two small straight sections to build.

the last corner is going to be a large trestle, extending down to the HO portion. I'm hoping to run a nice chasm and waterfall behind it.
But the above picture is the last part using the 1x2...back to 1x4 now that it is back above the HO layout so I can face it all off with stained red oak boards.

I'm hoping to start my 0n30 within the next two years (got way to many projects now to even think about building it :D ).

Anywho it will be built at about 68"off the floor and be above a HO layout as yours is. At 68" there will be at least 24" between the layouts. That should be enough verticle separation to look good.

The HO layout will be point to point but I'm hoping to run the 0n30 completely around the room.

Kind of comforting to see that there's another modeler out there who models out of display cases, kit boxes and such:thumb: Really nice home you're building for them there.:thumb:

In keeping with the overall separation between the two layouts, I'd offer this idea. In the picture, you have a 1x4 support between the two levels. By replacing this with 1/2" metal electrical conduit with 3/8" All Thread running thru it and secured to both decks with nuts/washers countersunk top and bottom, you'd have a lighter support that would not hide or detract from your modeling. Rightly placed, it could be partially hidden by a grain silo or an industrial smoke stack.

i like your idea, Shay. I'll likely use it to get power to the upper level.

The 1x4 is temporary for now...but the whole area is going to be faced off with stained and urethaned red oak, and the opening behind the 1x4 will be filled in.
This will extend around the area for the HO scale portion...the picture above showing the other side of the layout will be similar. The area with the bookcase ( you can't really see it, but it has the Bachmann boxes on it) will have a new, redoak bookcase built in.
