Tips for a nub please

I'll be ordering my first HO train set this week sometime. I'm ordering a set because i'm cheap, don't have a clue, and would like to get a small simple layout up and running for christmas.

Anyhow I've been lurking here for a while and am blown away by some of the layouts i've seen. Can anyone please direct me to a site or sites that have some detailed tutorials outlining diy construction of landscape elements? Trees, rocks, groundcover, building construction, and water...stuff like that.

Kalmbach Publishing has several great books on layout building and planing as well as scenery that will teach you step by step instrution..
