Frank - the Bay State Beer decals were from a fella that sells a wide variety of such on eBay. Don't recall his or his outfit's name any more but I think that he's still around there.

The Armour reefer is to my knowledge an original Train Miniature but one not often seen. It was an eBay purchase and came in a TM box, as I recall.

Regarding the A&P reefer, pictured below, it is a TM car too, of which I have several. These and quite a few other billboard reefers I have factor into my operations involving my icing station and more importantly, my A&P regional warehouse (second image).

As a parting shot, here's an image one of my home road reefers. Not exactly a billboard car but appropriate for the era.

walters reefer

This steel 40' plug door has quite a look. The red seams to raidate it bright color. I found it in a train store in Short Hills NJ. Dogerties. A intersting place. A very old train store. Not alot of HO there. Mainly O and S collectable stuff. The store comes with a very nice owner. A person who likes to chatt. A pleasent place.

The custom painted 40' Swift reefer

This reefer was done by a very friendly old friend Jack who passed away a few years ago. He was a active member of the Jersey Central railroad Historical society. Who's once a year train show is this Sunday in Clark NJ. At the Mother Seton High School. He and his wife were always a fixture at their table, at the opposite end of the isle from the white elephant table. A resident of Cranford he had a shop their for a number of years. He would always ask me to stop in and see his train memorabilia he had on display their. I hope I see his wife their on Sunday to reminisce. She has been their at the last few shows, alone. Here is the swift that he had done and shared with me.
Swift reefer, yellow and brown, most likely Champ decals,SRLX 4208. I hope you like it.
I will post photos of his other cars I have.

Edit; 2-15-2020 I replaced this photo because Jack was a good friend and person. It was his work that remade this reefer.P2195079 S.JPG

Wasn't the government - it was the money. Standard paint jobs are cheaper.

The advertising of yesteryear was based on something long gone from America - pride in what was made. Once mass production of thousands, if not millions of units per day became standard, followed by America ceasing altogether to make most of what it once did, advertising became pointless.

Well...sorta. The real issue was company A refused to ship their products in a reefer lettered for their competitor, company B. Plus there were other issues regarding leasing fees and such - some companies apparently just leased a car or two and lettered it for their company so they could get payments on the car's use, even if they never used it themselves. The railroads asked the ICC to intervene to make a more level playing field.

For more info on that...or if you're just interested in reefers (why else would you be reading this thread?) this is the book you need:
