Yeah, for awhile I had an idea about a ficticious pacific island nation, named Kalinin Maru...set in 1985, it was partial to large steam tank locomotives, and I created a complete roster of train Gif drawings for the state railway...boy that was cool!

Taking modeler's license like this really opens the door to creativity! Do you have a name for the State and any paint schemes in mind for the equipment?

Nachoman- These are BIG articulated mallets, like 2-6-6-2T's and such. LOL in the suggestion, but they're green/with gold lettering. but yes,, something like that :) ;)
I got the idea from Collin Garret's Steam book, and in there, it showed small drivered mallets, and It got my creative ball rolling....

Badyin Macfadyi vbmenu_register("postmenu_180239", true); - yes....I believe the head of the state railways is quite portly, but no top hat, or suit, you would be caught dead yearing those in the sweltering humidity!

Sorry it if feels like I'm hi-jacking your post technocrates...I don't intend to! :)

Technocrates- Perhaps it could be a newly-formed breakaway of mexico, which would allow you to buy some of the hand-me-down locos you want, you could also take advantage of Athearn's new mexican-painted stuff, like TFM and NdeM stuff, not to mention that you could also use first generation diesels along with more modern stuff, which would be uber cool! also it would give you some very interesting scenery options, and one more thing, there's an abundance of untapped natural recources in mexico, that very few people can get their hands on, and with this new break away idea, the railroad could play THE major part of that sort of operation!!

The big question: have they always been the state railways or did the state take them over (say, within 50 years before your modelling date). It seems to take that long for the railway to shake off its past and develop an identity of its own. A nationalised system could have some quite conflicting loco ideas.

A Dutch modeller, Ruud Bergevoet (sp?) I think created his own Central American republic, complete with history etc. He built quite a lot of unique models in N.
I just found an interesting article in an old magazine on the subject.

You could go with a large Indian reservation where they discovered some valuable resource and developed their own railroad which also became an interchange railroad between two or more large class 1 railroads (CNR, CP and NYC, B&O, NP, GN....) and situate it on the US/Canadian border, close to you. I was thinking of doing that in my area with the Appalacian mountains serving as a mining hotbed for the ficticious "AM" Atlantic Midland Railroad, with the diesels painted with the AM letters forming mountain peaks, but that is way way back on the burners.

Al Kalmbach did something similar with his pioneering Great Gulch, Yahoo Valley & Northern, which served "Mintario" a country located between Minnesota and Ontario.

I was going to take Pennsylvania off the side of my Spectrum 44 tonner, and replace it with my own markings, but i didn't. Who could have the heart to take out the old Pennsy?

And a commuter rail to the casino.
