Can sketchup be used to create simple human figures? Are there any tutorials out there which details the process?

I guess you could pretty much create anything that you can imagine with sketch-up and also make it as simple or complex as you want it to be.
I don't know of any tutorials for creating human figures but the regular tutorials will give you insight into using sketchup to create anything you want.

Sketchup is aimed at architectural subjects, so it has some excellent tools for fairly geometric shapes, less so for organic ones, but that said, it should be possible to make any shape you need. Knowing the best route and which tools is a matter of practice, a fair bit of trial and error, and starting out with something simple. I don't know of any tutorials on figures specifically, but there are lots of others on the SketchUp site, as well as models that can be downloaded and examined.

Check out www.wings3d.com and www.anim8or.com as these might be better for your needs, and they are free as well.
