Understand that there are usually a dozen or more spam messages deposited here every day. There are anywhere from five to ten spammers, or potential spammers that are dealt with. Around Nov and Dec we were dealing with four times that amount. Regardless of what we do, some slip under the radar, but I guarantee you, yelling at them only raises your blood pressure because they are long gone and are depositing their garbage on someone else's forum and will never see your response. Nope, the best way to deal with them is to click on the "report this post" icon to the lower left of the post, then just walk away...

.... and let us have all the fun of putting their garbage in out specially made trash can, and banning them from here by dropping them in the river tied to an old rail section....

Yep! Please do report them. I do check on every reported post. 99% of the time, the spams are gone before I get here, the moderators here are FAST! but I always check. And I always appreciate everyone who takes the time to report a post. It's great to know people care enough about the community to take the time to report it. And a big hand to the moderators for keeping the community clean.

See here now is that the thing is you can't make it realize. The spammers are "bots" on servers that search the interent and look for forums like this one. The bots are programmed to register and then post up a message. Even boards that require e-mail. The bot will register an e-mail addy and then respond when the Guage server sends it the confirmation notice. Some more sophisticated message board programs will require you to see a secret word which prevents spam as a bot cannot "read" the letters.

In short your rant falls on def ears, because your screaming at a computer in some other part of the world. Which neither understands or cares how P.O.'ed you are at it.

It is most definately a nuisance though. The most disturbing stuff I've seen on other boards is the child **** stuff. That crap really gets my goat in ways I will not describe as it is inappropriate for this forum. :curse:

They are actually bots, well most are robots made to find forums with lax registration or geust posts. The bots skim the boards for keywords and mimick others topics. I am an admin at a forum of 25,000 and we have found that turning off guest posts and adding GIF #/letter verifications slow them down drastically. By drastically i mean it stops the bots and not the weirdo's that act like robots posting spam.

We don't allow guests to post, and we have an email and picture text verification system where they must answer an email and visually decode a picture before they are allowed to post. Unfortunately, one should not be surprised that for $400, there is software available that is designed to defeat all this and most of them use gmail, yahoo or another free email address to do this. We have a couple of other tricks up our sleeves that we can't reveal only that they help us to ID a spammer before they post, but it's not foolproof and we still get some that register and post quickly enough and we can't have someone here all the time to catch them in the act, so yes, please report bad posts. I've noticed an increase in reported posts lately, and I thank you all for that. :thumb: :thumb: It's the only way to help us react quickly.

You are right that is the only way to defeat them. There isnothing that says we have to open their thread.
Just report them and go on with life!!!!
Getting really upset is not going to change spammers from doing their deed.
I get hundreds of spams a week. I have tried everything to stop them and they still keep coming!!!!!!!!! The government web site does vertually nothing to get to these people.
So I just live with the junk and realize there are just inconsiderate people out there like in life itself!

You thought that this place was bad, Internet model train club http://www.trainclub.com/ Had it worse. People kept on putting Porno, advertisements, healthcare stuff and all that stuff all over the bulletin board and it was just a mess. Somebody hacked in and put a block on the front page and I think they got rid of it now. and they had to shut down the bulletin board because of the mess. And I agree that there should no spammers at this sight. They can really mess things up. I can't get them to go away, They just keep comin for me to delete em'.

Yep I was a member on that forum, They didn't have the guest post block like the gauge does at the time. So it got bad especially when they changed things around. So thats why I registered here.
