    Hi everybody.
I am laying roadbed and got to wondering, the setout and pickup track connected to the yard, would that be well maintained and up on roadbed, like a mainline, or poorly maintained and layed on the ground like sidings and yard tracks? I am not modeling any certian railroad, so that does'nt matter. I'm just wondering what most prototype railroads would do. Thanks for any advice.

Most set out and pick up tracks would be laid on dirt like other sidings. You are talking low speeds, and at most one or two movements a day on the prototype, so the heavy mainline ballast just isn't needed.
