Had the opportunity yesterday to visit the San Diego Railroad Museum. Glass case displays are at a minimum but there are around 80 pieces of rolling stock. The short train ride is 1 1/2 hours ($12) and you can ride in the cab ($25). A tour of the restoration shops is given after the ride and I got to talk to the Steam Locomotive Superintendent. The one operational loco is down for maint (aren't they always) and there is another ready for restoration. Time frame - 2 years and funding. I go to work in 2 weeks! :D Will also enter engineer training program. Lots of pics on thier web site. www.sdrm.org

Tearrah, Sounds like their museum has lots of hands on volunteer work availible.

I was going to be a volunteer for the TVRM museum here in CHatt. Tn. but was afraid they would put me to work in the gift shop. :D

Good luck with the job.

The SDRM website has some seriously good info on steam locomotion, for those interested in the technical side of things.
