Rock Island Question

Here's a picture of the P2K Geep the better half picked up at the Springfield show this past weekend.
She thought the handrails needed something.
Figured one of the many RI fans could help me out.
If any...What color should the handrails be painted?
Is this an accurate paint scheme for this loco?
Do the fuel tanks get anything?

It's definitely an accurate paint scheme, but might not be from your era??? This paint scheme (maroon with white stripes) was used in the 1950's for the most part; some units might have lasted into the late 60's (the Rock was never known for their speed of repainting locos).

Can't speak to the handrails for certain, but P2K usually does a pretty good job of getting handrail colors right. It's not working for me right now, but Jeff's Guide to the Rock Island (http://www.rockisl.com/ ) will have that info for you - just look under "Paint Schemes".

Checked out that site...Looks like the rails at the steps were painted white.

If I'm not mistaken, they would have to be white or yellow to meet the safety requirements introduced in the 50's. I'm diggin' pretty far back, and I only have a brain the size of a walnut.

Yes, Jon, just at the ends where the steps are. The same is true of all locos.
