Hi, Gang!

I'm looking for anyone's past experience with remotoring MDC's HO Shay. I have two that I'd like to bash into On30. One is an older 3-truck with what looks like a really old-style motor. The other is a slightly newer 2-truck with a can-type looking motor.

I've heard that NWSL (??) has a remotoring kit...is this correct? I'm technically a "Newbie", so is this a relatively simple swap?

Looking forward to ANY help!:D

Hi, The Can motor in the MDC is in fact the older version, but still a good motor. The new versions are being produced with the new 5 pole S/W open frame and these are superb, and will take a flywheel also.

I have these in all except one of my MDC shays.

Re-Motoring MDC Shays

Hi Steve, Sorry to say its not a simple swap but its not the worst in the world either.

Send me your address and I will snail mail you some articles on what's required to accomplish the swap and re-gear operation.

My e-mail address is trainman@operamail.com

The articles are too lengthy to post here.

There's a good book on reworking the MDC Shay....

Called, oddly enough, "The MDC Shay Handbook", by Jeff Johnston, published by Oso Publishing. I believe it can be purchased either directly from the publisher, or from Model Die Casting.
