question about hand laid track.....

hello everyone, been a while since i posted here,ops: anyways, i have a question about the ties used for hand laid track..... what can i use to color the ties on a campbells thru plate girder bridge? someone told me to use black india ink and to just put a drop or two on each tie and let it soak in to the whole tie, is there any truth to this? im new to this, so any information is appreciated. thanks!

Well, I have heard of using india ink. I would think you need to get an old rag or papertowel and spread it out along the whole tie. If I remember correctly you could get a stain that would compare to ties and dip a rag in the stain, spread it out on the tie.
