Polyfiber sources, tree building

The Feb issue of MR has an excellent article on building pine trees. I wonder, has anyone found a source for the polyfiber mentioned in this article? I believe that some furnace filters use this stuff instead of fiberglass, but I think it would usually be white. Anyone have any luck staining/painting this material? I'm going to check out Michael's and AC Moore today as well as the local Home Depot for filters. I hope this works, and if it does I will let you all know. The pines shown in this article look really excellent and more realistic than anything I have seen so far...the Woodland Scenics pines, somehow or other really just don't cut it. This seems like a really good alternative. Any info and ideas will be much appreciated.

I haven't seen the article, but one source of poly-fiber is Sunlit Vistas. Just do a google search on "Sunlit Vistas Bramble Bush". They have black and brown.
