Painting a river?

Ive made a few attempts at painting a river on my layout and each time it looks horrible. Im using the woodland scenics realistic water as the water. as far as colors go im using burnt umber, raw umber and yellow ochre. im having one hell of a time blending all the colors so theres no sharp lines. Any ideas on colors or painting?

what kind of paint are you using? Acrylic paints can dry within minutes in warm, dry air and mix poorly on the applied surface. Sometimes that is good, sometimes that is bad. I know when I use acrylic paints on canvas, I have to add a medium to increase workability and drying time so that I can blend the paint once on the canvas.
