Gotta be one of the coolest looking engines I've ever seen....
Ah, the Commodore Vanderbilt. Marx made a lot of variants of that. It's expensive by Marx standards, but not by contemporary Lionel standards. Unfortunately that locomotive does have the "fat wheel" problem that keeps it from working with modern switches, but there are some later Marx locomotives with a motor that will work, and it happens to be a drop-in replacement. For that reason the motor tends to be worth as much as the whole locomotive.
It also came in red, green, and gray, and possibly other colors. Black is by far the most common.
It'll be interesting to see what that ends up going for. I'd expect $75 at a show. If it goes for more than that I may have some work to do.
It's got a Buy It Now of $65.
hey, i was just looking at that.......lol
i can see it now, cannonball is going to be out biding me on everything, ,,,,lol we seem to have the same tastes in trains....lol
Well, I'm still stuck as you probalby saw in my Lionel VS Marx post.
On one hand, I've always wanted that diecast Lionel with the smoke and the headlight and the horn. On the other hand, the new AmeriTrains/Marx stuff is just so retro cool. (And made in the US) Can't have everything so I'm going to have to make a choice eventually.
just get both, get one, then wait a few months, or as long as ya need then get the other.
The only problem will be convincing my wife I need both when I go to buy the second one.
She's usually pretty forgiving of my habits since I make the majority of the money but I know when I'm pushing it.
you know how i deal with the wife?
i went out and bought her her first brand new car. (16000.00)
so now every time she jumps me about spending $$ on trains i just bring up the fact that shes got a 2006 car, and im driving a 1984 s-10...
she shuts up real fast!....lol
My wife doesn't drive and I have a 2006 HHR.
As I said though, as long as the bills are paid and we're not hungry she doesn't complain much. I've spent far more on musical equipment than I have on trains so she's used to it.
now if my wife remembers about my Harley,,,,, then im in trouble!
Have you seen trains by the guy that custom paints them on ebay? Amazing work.
Well, somebody nailed the B.I.N.
Bye bye, Commodore. (I just wish it had been buy buy instead.)
You mean the one that did the Chicago Bears Marx train?
He outbid me on another engine.
Both of them bid on any locos that look like they'll go cheaply, then they re-do them. The seller who did this particular auction just cleans them up and makes them look as new as possible; the other seller usually repaints his buys. I think I've bid against both of them at one point or another. I've won some, they've won more.
I think it's cool that they're keeping these old engines going but on the other hand, it makes it that much harder to get a fair deal on anything in worthwhile shape.
