Deano....Great job as usual on the weathering :thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:
I agree with Wayne....The patched paint really is a nice touch!:winker:

On another note....I was showing off the two box cars that you weathered for me....and they both got rave reviews! :thumb:
I told them that you don't use chalk and they couldn't believe it....they figured that to get results that good, you had to use it.
    Thought you'd like to know:winker:

Deano...That's one of the best weathering jobs I've seen..!! Not only the coloring, but the faded original markings, and the patch...They all really come together to make a great piece..!!
BTW...How did you "fade" the original markings..??

Deano, your MMWX 1267 is awesome! :thumb::thumb: I love those patches, they make the car look even more interesting.

Steve, Jim, Gus and Kurt, THANK YOU! , for the VERY KIND comments:smilie: , i REALLY APPRECIATED them:mrgreen: , again, THANK YOU!

Hey, obviously I'm Not a "professional weatherer":roller: , but I'm not selling my stuff on ebay either, i just do it for myself, and if i get a good response from you folks on a project, that just makes my day(THANK YOU),and lets me know that i am "on track":winki::mrgreen: .

Gus, you asked how i faded the lettering on that hopper,
Well, i did it the LEAST favorite way i like to do it, but i didn't really have much choice:oops: . Normally i fade the paint and lettering by using straight isopropyl alcohol, OR, i would airbrush the whole car with a similar color to what it is:winki: . In this case, i didn't have any colors even close to that car, so that way of doing it was out:roller: , and the lettering on it was decals, so washing them off with alcohol was out of the question.

on cars with decals for lettering i take an exacto knife and VERY, VERY CAREFULLY scratch the lettering off, being careful NOT to go through the color of the car:winki: . on smaller lettering it looks fantastic, in my opinion, not so great on the larger letters though:oops: , but thats how i do it:winki: .

    *****************************************************
    MY WEATHERING...
Steve brought up a good point, i ONLY use paint and isopropyl alcohol to do my weathering:winki: , NO powders and such, i guess thats why I'm NOT a great weatherer though:toug::119: . i will add this though, when i was into N scale, powders/chalks were really the only way to go:winki: , paint just didn't seem to work as good in N scale as it does in HO.

    MY WEATHERING SUPPLIES:
    1- LOTS of paper towels
    2- an airbrush
3- a bottle of 70% strength isopropyl alcohol
4- an assortment of paint brushs
5- a bottle that has a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and Polly Scale "engine black", i use this for a dirt and grime wash:winki: .
6- a bottle of Polly Scale "Milwaukee Road orange" and a bottle of Polly Scale "boxcar red", i mix these two colors together to come up with the various shades of rust that i use:winki: .
7- a bottle of Polly Scale "engine black", and a bottle of Polly Scale "reefer gray", i use these to airbrush grime & road dust on cars.
8- PICTURES TO GO BY, this is very important, the pics will help you know how the car should look according to the era your modeling:winki: .

**I am currently working on TWO cars right now, one is a cheapy Trainline WP boxcar:oops: , yea, its cheap, but it has the big feather on it, so i really liked it:mrgreen: . the other car is an Accurail CNW covered hopper, neither of these are going to be done up as modern rust buckets though:cry: , sorry to inform you fans of the "modern rust buckets":119: .

    till next time...Stay on track:winki:

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS...

Well, the folks were out of town today, so i decided to stay home and build some of my freight car kits. i built three covered hoppers today, 1 Bev-Bel Atheran BB Illinois Terminal, and 2 Accurail's, a UP and a CNW.

After building these three kits back to back, while they are so similar, i noticed some differences between Athearn BB and the Accurail's, i did a comparison between the two and posted it in the "Product Review" section of this forum. if you are interested in reading it, you can do so by clicking HERE .

I ALSO started weathering some cars, here are the "before" shots, i will post the "after" shots as i finish them:winki: . sorry, NONE of these will be rust buckets, just various degrees of dirt and grime will be on them. after looking over the rest of my covered hoppers, i see i have plenty enough rust buckets already:oops: .

After i get those cars weathered, i plan on doing a roll-by with just ALL my covered hoppers, hopefully i will have all those weathered by this coming weekend...we'll see:119: .

i WAS going to head out to the yards today, but thought you folks have got to be sick of seeing pretty much the same UP & WSOR stuff:oops: , so i opted NOT to go out today, perhaps tomorrow, who knows:toug: .

**OH, FORGOT TO MENTION, Athearn has bought out the WHOLE Tower 55 line from Overland Models:eeki: . those of us that were lucky enough to get the ES44AC series engines have the ONLY Tower 55 products they made:winki: . ALL the SD70ACe tooling, plus whatever else Tower 55 had will now be under the Genesis line. pretty interresting huh:winki: .

    Till next time...Stay on track:winki: .

I'll say! One day while visiting my LHS, I had one of those Tower 55's in my hands. I came oh so close to buying it but turned it down. Later, I gave in and ordered one but after months and months with no response, I finally gave up and cancelled my order. I've always wished I'da just gotten the one I had in my hands at that time. Too late now eh?

TrainNut, i was just shopping around tonight, boy, the Tower55 engines have went up:eeki: , though its the time of the year now for train shows:mrgreen: , I'm sure they can still be found reasonably at the shows:winki: .

Scott(jesso) , I'm not sure if you read this thread:confused: , but i seen in another thread you mentioned a shot of an EX-Utah Belt SD40-2 i had taken a pic of, this is the ONLY shot i have of that engine, and honestly, it was purely coincidental that i got it:119: , that engine was behind an EX-WC GP30 that i was getting shots of, if i had remembered you liked Utah Belt, i surely would have got better shots of it for you:winki: .

    Thanks Deano,
One of the guys that used to be in the train club built those out of the Kato units, those were great engines, Utah Railway replaced all of the them with Australian SD50s', yet again making it very difficult to model UR. They are up to three gp40's now that are normal, but everything else that they have is basically a rebuild.

Utah Railway, not Utah Belt. That's Eric Brooman's freelance line.

Scott, THANKS for posting that info:thumb: , i wasn't aware of that, though i don't follow the Utah Railway, i thought it was very interesting:thumb: .

Triplex, DOH!:eeki: ... ...your right, just goes to show i read to many model RR magazines, looks like i got 'em mixed up:119: .

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS....
Well, dad and i made it to the Monroe train show:mrgreen: , dad got a NEW DVD, and i got a few items as well:winki: .

EVERYTHING i got was so darn cheap, i practically stole them:winki::mrgreen: , heres the items i picked up...

    an Athearn covered hopper...

a BRAND NEW MRC UP C420 Alco! i picked this up for just $25.00:eeki: , i never owned an MRC engine, it runs FANTASTIC, it crawls like you wouldn't believe. with a sound decoder installed in this, i am sure it will be AWESOME!
the detail is better then the Atlas Trainman engines, but i would put it in that class. i was so happy to get this engine because its so hard to find UP Alcos. the gray is to dark, but thats nothing that an airbrush couldn't take care of:winki: . i cant wait to detail this engine out, this will be TOP PRIORITY on my project list, though dad would disagree:toug: , you'll see why later in this post.
Take a good look at this engine now, because it wont look the same when i am done:winki::mrgreen: .

NEXT UP i found an acceptable UP dome car to complete my UP passenger train:mrgreen: , i was considering leaving it in its Greyhound colors, but the more i think about it, i am leaning towards painting it Armor yellow:winki: .

I picked up an Athearn SD45, its a dummy, the previous owner boogered up the fuel tank:roller: , but by the time i am through with it, you would never had known it:thumb: .

I got a BRAND NEW FM H10-44, WITH SOUND, so darn cheap you wouldn't believe it:twisted: . Dad loves this engine:mrgreen: , this will be the second project on my list. you wouldn't believe how light this is, as opposed to the older ones Walther's put out back in the early 80's. i didn't think it would pull much so we put it on dads layout and was able to run 15 correctly weighted cars behind it, good enough for me:thumb: .

I also picked up 5 packs of #5 Kadee couplers:thumb: , and one of two of the engines needed to kitbash a UP specific engine i have secretly been wanting to do for some time now:twisted: .

    THATS IT:smilie: .
    Till next time...Stay on track:winki:

Wow.....That was some take...!!! You did practically steal that stuff....
I'd paint all the other passenger cars to match the one you just bought. That's a beautiful paint scheme....
Love that Alco as well (the H10...)....:thumb:

Some great finds you got there, Dean. :thumb::thumb: I especially like that Alco, but the FM is nice, too - I'm not surprised that your Dad likes it. ;):-D
I'm with Steve and Gus on that dome car - the grey looks great, although I am a big NYC fan, too. ;):p:-D:-D

Gus, Steve & Wayne, THANK YOU for the complements on my bargains:thumb::mrgreen: .

As for the UP dome with the Greyhound/Overland paint scheme, i am 99.9% sure that paint scheme on a dome is...A LIE!:eeki: . I have seen no records that that paint scheme was ever on a dome, and i checked all 12 of my UP DVD's, never seen one, checked through literally thousands of my UP pics tonight, never seen one:cry: .

that paint scheme was put on older passenger cars, i have only seen that paint scheme on the "Harriman" type passenger cars, i haven't seen it on any streamliners:cry: . (where is Triplex when you need him:rolleyes::119: )

It will be awhile before that car makes it to the paint shop, i have a few other projects going i want to finish first:winki: . i was real happy to find that car though, the only UP dome i had was a Con-Cor, and it was TOTALLY WRONG for UP, they NEVER had that style dome. (pic below)

The NEW dome i just got will fit perfectly(when painted) with my Walther's & Riverossi streamliners, now i can consider my UP passenger train complete.

Here is the WRONG dome style that my NEW dome car will replace.
