I tried to save some mony by not using road bed in the hidden portions of track. Two problems resulted.
1. The transistion from the road bed to the foam board is tricky, any suggestions?
2. The difference in noise is un real! The new type road bead is extremly quit. When the train hits the tunnels it makes a racket!!

--I made up a transition section using Woodland Scenics 2% grade kit.
--You could make a joint section by taking short pieces of both roadbeds, called A and B, and sticking them on the underside of the other roadbed. You would have roadbed A with B glued under it and roadbed B with A glued under it. Both are now the same thickness at the end. Now glue a stiff piece of board or ?? under all of it to join it.
