While working at the nearby naval installation I saw this model. It's a 1/48 scale Saipan sitting in a model of a navy dry dock, also 1/48. (Sorry about the quality, but it's a camera phone) The two models were built at different times and places and somewhere along the line somebody got the idea to put the two together. It makes for an awesome display. The dry dock has a cutaway area to show construction of the real thing. An interesting note on the carrier model is that the only materials used were pine wood and brass. Seems they poopooed the idea of using any plastic. Check out this website:www.dt.navy.mil/cnsm.
