I am looking for information on N scale boat and barges, plus a lock gate system, to include in my layout. Could anyone please give some suggestions?
I have received a kit from Langley, but it really looks out of proportion to me.

please...

Please, could some one direct me to a link where to read about the waterways issues in a train layout?
I am sure someone already did something like that on his layout.
Thank you.

Thank you Dennis. I went there and had more than just a look. Amazing!
The visit however triggered more questions.
I have a European layout, and I am planning on a second american layout.
On my European layout, I used a channel, such as those in France, as a way to mask the joint between the existing layout and a stripe that I have added as a second thought. The channel enters in the layout through a tunnel ( something as actually visible in France) in the narrow side of the rectangle and goes to an end similar to yours. I would have liked to add locks. I have a couple of barges manufactured by Noch.
On the american layout, I am still in the planning stage, so I can do what I want. Sure, I would like some water, as I like the interaction train/ ships/harbour.
Questions are: Any model of locks available anywhere?
N scale ships: what is available? Or one has to scratch build them?
Thank you for any suggestion.

You may find what you are looking for in the Langley models web site.
It is in the UK and they have canal boats and lock gates.
I have a few canal barges myself. They are moulded and have to be painted.
My own ship were made for me by a friend.

Dennis, thanks, but as mentioned in my initial post, I found Langley models pretty useless, given that their canal boats are as narrow as my N tracks.I do have one of their kits, and I could have spared the hassle to get it.
I am not lucky enough to have a boat modelling friend, so I hoped some decent kit in N scale might be available.

I will likely try SYLVAN scale model ( thank you!), and any additional suggestion.

Langley's models or of the British style narrow boats and they are narrow to fit in English canals.
Hornby makes a canal system in OO/HO in their Skaledale range, again modelled on the narrow canals. I don't know if it's duplicated in their N range (Lyddle End).
