Greetings all....
I was wondering if anyone here is involved in the NMRA? I heard that it is a good investment to join this outfit.
Could someone that is on the executive contact me? I am interesed in finding out a bit about the cost of joining the National and Regional Division in my area.

Executive what?

I've been a member of the NMRA for 22 years and may be able to answer a few questions for you. In fact, there are a couple of pages on the NMRA's web site that are designed specifically to answer questions. Take a look at http://www.nmra.org/ for 'Why Join' and 'Member Benefits'. As for joining, you can join the national organization on-line for $45.00 a year including the NMRA Bulletin magazine.

As for Regions and Divisions, that all depends upon where you live. I live in the Midwest Region and region dues are $6.00 a year if you want to join it, but there are no division dues and any NMRA member is automatically a member of the division in which they live. Other regions have different dues with MCR having no region dues, but some divisions having dues. You can find links to various regions and divisions from the NMRA home page.

After you take a look at the pages that I mentioned, I'll be happy to see if I can get you answers to specific questions.

I belong to the NMRA, not because I feel I get any great, personal, direct benefit from it, but because I think that although the organization gets a little carried away --- like building an overly grand, largely unnecessary headquarters several years ago --- I feel that since it is the one organization for all model railroaders, it should be supported.

I've only attended one national convention (1994) and one regional. I suppose if I had more money and more time, I'd attend a few more, but then I'm sort of turned off by the wierd little nerds running around in cute little engineers caps or conductors uniforms.....

I've been a member of the NMRA for 22 years and have never attended a National Convention and it doesn't matter even a little bit to me. I did attend one National Train Show and can say that I have never seen anything like it and it was worth the trip in and of itself. Everyone should make one of these if possible. (Yes, it's held along with the convention, but you don't have to attend the convention to go to the NTS.)

I have found the local divisional level to hold the most interest for me and is the level at which I am the most active. This is where you meet other modelers who share this great hobby. This can be the place where newcomers are introduced to the hobby, where those nerds in the funny caps reach out to the kids of all ages who have the potential to become model railroaders. This is where model railroaders spend hours explaining how and why they built those modular layouts the way they did and sit with kids 6 to 16 and help them assemble a car kit to take home, where new skills are introduced and nurtured.

Yes, I am active at the local level and wear one of those caps and vests. It helps the newcomers know who they can talk to and ask questions of.

Check out the Central Indiana Division web site for a better look at us. http://cid.railfan.net/
