I just bought a new Z-4000 transformer, got it all hooked up, turned it on and although it's very quiet, every second or two there's a "thumping" type noise. It's not random but every second or two. I just want to make sure I didn't get a dud. Thanks!

Hmmm... mine doesn't do that. Do you have it hooked up properly? Also, what are your layout specs (type of track, layout size, etc)? BTW, if your overload indicator comes on, your track may be to blame.

    Geno,
Strange thing, it makes that sound no matter even when it's not hooked to the track. So yours runs perfectly silent?

I figured out what it was. I turned the unit upside down and noticed the cooling fan wasn't rotating. A wire was keeping it from moving. I used a small screwdriver and pushed the wire in further to allow the fan to spin freely. It's quiet as a mouse now.

Glad to hear it- I've had mine for about seven years and it runs like new.
