Lunch Break: Lafayette CSX Yards

Today, I decided to spend my lunch hour at the CSX yards with a roll of film. OK, with a 256 MB memory chip.

First I entered the Yard Shack, erm, OK, the "Multimedia Pod", and asked the customary permission to shoot some pics.

Barely caught this one as they were finishing up. I duno what they'r eunloading, rusty redish stuff. Plastic pellets?

The yards are located on the old Monon property, and that the old Monon main leaving the yard, Northward to Brookston, Rensselaer and many other small towns on it's way to Chicago.

Looking South, into the yard, it looks to me to be at least twice as big as the NS yards I drive by everyday. Actually I driv eby this one too, but it's obscured by trees and far enough off to warrent stopping in to shoot pics. Very friendly folks at CSX always have obliged.

The train is getting longer. It's about 30 feet down to the yards from the parking lot, which makes for a handy photo perspective.

The skeletal remains of the past coal era watches approvingly over the yards as the Mighty Diesels of CSX keep the silver rail alive and well into our modern era of technology and rapid change.

The road leading down into the yard has this sign, which seems somehow out of place in todays world of not accepting responsibility for one's own action. In days past, it would have seemed silly to post such a thing, stating that you are responsible for your own safety.

On the other end of hte parking lot, is a lot more rail activity. Close to the sam elevel of the lot, and still using some of hte old Monon buildings. This is the area where I shot the trailer getting a fresh load.

Behind the shops and the hoppers is the A/D from the NS yards and a main line.
