I don't know of any that are finished, but this link here has one that has been in the works for nearly 2 years now. I don't know why it isn't finished yet, but that is as close as I have found. I too want an Akira Class starship.
    Anyone else have an idea?

For obvious reasons, I too want a model of the USS Thunderchild... :D
I am planning to design one, but there are a lot of other models in my design list before it, so my guess is someone else will have a model out long before I get to it...

I hate to say this, don't quite know if it's inappropriate, but isn't there more than one NX card model floating around? It's not that much of a stretch to change an NX into an Akira is it?

I personally find that it's faster to make one from scratch than to try and change a currently existing model. Not to mention the pride one feels in making your own model from scratch...
    But that's just me... :D

I know that feeling, but hey, I'm just sayin. If someone wants to build an Akira and can't find one available it's not a big stretch to turn an NX back into the Akira.

The only Akira I know of is a WIP. You can salivate over it here:

I thought the designer had provided a link to the untextured version, but I didn't see it.

Apparently it needs texturing. And as someone building a large scale version 24" long (~1/700) in pl*stic (sorry, started building it before I found the wonders of card) to do this subject well takes a lot of texturing. Even though its a gun-boat, it has a ton of port holes and getting the armor plating right, due to the compound curves, can be tricky.

Yeah and I know Oyl was working on one, but can't remember if he got it finished.

The NX class is close, but it's still far enough away from an Akira that you'd be better off scratchbuilding one.

Almost the entire saucer section and the trailing arms are the same.

Not entirely. I do agree with you about the basic design, but I would still go from scratch.
IMO if you alter the NX-1 to the Akira, you would get an Akira that looks like the NX-1. I'm not even going into textures.

A little comparison after 40seconds of google and 120seconds of photoshop...
(the first person who gives me any lip about scale gets decked!)

OK, I'm not going to argue. It's the same basic design with minor differences. Nacelles up, nacelles down.... Not that much more different. Textures, yeah, but it's really close from the saucer back. The biggest difference is the nacelles.

There are plenty of these ships in different games, I think there are a few meshes floating around too. I think I saw a Google Sketch up version as well. Anyone who has 3Ds could probably export it to the right file type and unwrap it.
