...Okay, once again- I found this doing some research. They are early topographic maps (1887-on) that are archived by an educational institution. For the northeastern modeler- well, you can find a lot of rail lines, original trackage and names long forgotten. Some very interesting sites to see (on the maps, if you're into reading maps, and no one seems to read anymore :( ).

Besides the archival, historical aspects of this goldmine of info- it's also artwork IMHO. Not all the directories work, but there's quite a bit that does.
