I am building a layout(my first) and was wondering what the best permanent track was(for alla around track and turnouts/turntables)

This is a question that can't really be answered as each type has pluses and minuses. Starting out I would say use Atlas code 83. It's a middle of the road track that is fairly inexpensive and has a full line of accesories. There are just so many if, and, and buts involved. FRED

For track and turnouts for a beginner, it's hard to beat Atlas, they make good track at a reasonable price. There are other brands, some are more expensive. There's also track and roadbed together, which I've never used so I won't comment on it.

Stay away from the old brass track. You can get it cheap, but it's a headache. It tarnishes and your trains stop running. Stick with nickel-silver rail.

Do you have a track plan you're following?
