I got a few engines at the local train show this weekend and i was wondering how do i check to see if i can install a decoder in them.1 is a altlas GP35 and the other 2 are Kato SD-40's.Right now i run DC but plan to go to the local club wich is DCC so i also need a decoder that can switch between DCC and DC.Any help with this will be great.

Most decoders will run on DC and DCC.

To use a decoder the motor must be electrically "isolated" from the frame. You can check this with an Ohm meter.

Maybe if you post the detailed description of each loco someone here will know if the motors are isolated.
