Hi Everyone

I'm very new to the world of papercraft. I was an addict of 'Airfix' models in my youth, and always dreamed of the kind of material that so many of you are producing so well from the simplest (but most versatile!) material.

I have (obviously) been blown away by the work of UHU02 who is clearly a master of the art - was tempted to start with a contribution tot he 'appreciation thread' but thought this was a better beginning! Anyway, I've been a lifelong fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey after seeing it at my local flicks aged 8 or 9. I had the Airfix Orion III but even at that age found that model dissatisfying. So what better place for me to start than UHU02's excellent rendition. Hope you enjoy the pic of my first ever attempt at papercraft (I only had to reprint one part!)...

Hi Jacopo, I too was a big Airfix & plastic model fan & builder but changed over to paper about 9 years ago and have not regretted it!

Zealot is the place to be, great people, fantastic builds and designs (and occasional bad joke). For your first attempt (and to tackle a UHU design) that is brilliant!

Welcome aboard!

Hi Cybergrinder

Thanks for the welcoming message. It was an interesting project to discover the techniques used beyond cutting out a tab and glueing onto the back of another part. Amazed at what can be done to 'curve' paper and get a level of definition and detail I'd never have believed possible! I know my attempt isn't perfect (camera makes it look worse obviously ) but already feel I've picked up some how-tos from this first go. UHU02's visual instructions cut right through the language barrier don't they? Still getting familiar with the layout of Zealot - but looking forward to improving my skills on another model.

Hello Jacopo,

welcome to Zealot! :)

Like CG said, Zealot is the right place to be for beginners and paper "pros". Our members are always very helpful. So if you have a question, don't hesitate to ask.

Your Orion looks awesome (thank you for the pic! ;) ).

Just take a look around, familiarize yourself with the features of the forum and the important thing:

Have fun and enjoy! :)

And... In the spirit of not just posting a finished model, some build photos (and an excuse to show off the interior...)...

Looks great!, Who authored this model? It looks a lot larger than the ones I have seen.

Hi Spaceagent

Well, that must be just down to my dodgy camera angles - this is just the standard (?) UHU02 template on A4 paper. I'd guess it's roughly 1/144 scale and it's about 16 inches long. Thanks for the message - I took a bit of a deep breath before putting it on here...

OK flushed with the success of my first effort, and on the back of your encouraging comments, I have already begun my next 'project' - where should I go to start a thread describing the build? Sorry for being dense...

Hello and welcome to Zealot. You did a very good job with UHU02's Orion III.
You have come to the right forum for all things SCI-FI. There are many members here who are HUGE SCI-FI FANS (myself included). So if you have any questions, comments, concern, need help or advice, please feel free to ask and we will help you (or at least point you in the right direction).
Once again, welcome aboard. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Look under "Forums" and star a "New" build thread under the appropriate heading. ;)
