    Alco built 433 FA-1s and 249 FB-1s between 1946 and 1950.

    Note the side grilles. The majority of the length is see-through mesh with visible structure behind it, not unlike the grilles on EMD F3s. The rear section, however, is a vertical-slit grille. This section is right at the back of the engine - pay attention, that's the easiest way to tell them from FA-2s.

    Do not go by the captions for photographs. The FA-1 and FA-2 are very often confused. http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ln/ln341.jpg is an FA-1, but was identified on the linking page as an FA-2.
