Most likely, 12 volts. Much the same sorta globe etc that lights your locos. Just place one wire each on each track, and turn your controller on. The globe should glow.
Just use an old controller and hook all your building lights up to it.

Often DC power packs will have a spare set of DC terminals specifically meant for accessories. An old controller is a good way to light one's accessories and even have a "dimmer switch" for them!
Ya my transformer has an accesory port. What kind of thing attatches to it to run the buildings to?
