The story of why Shun-pop's Star Wars models were taken off his site for a while must be around here somewhere as to to why it would not be wise to get Universal to protect their Airwolf copyrights.

Okay if I understand this right instead of coming down on the pirates (I'm guessing in this instance "Lucas" is none other than George Lucas?) they came down on the guy who designed the models and accused him of being complicit with the pirates?

    Unbeleivable.

Not quite. Since Sunichi was not a licensed producer of Star Wars models, he believed he had no right to stop the pirate selling his models on ebay. He thought that to make a stink with ebay would bring the attention of Lucas Arts on himself. So, rather than risk it, he decided to remove all of his models from distribution (other than his original robots, Lens Head and Gunwalker). It was not that he was accused of being complicit, just that he really does not hold the copyright to his Star Wars models, which still belong to Lucas, and so had no right to stop the pirate. To solicite Lucas' help in stopping the pirate would most likely result in Lucas issuing a C&D to Sunichi as well. Rock and hard place situation.

Lucasfilm's execs do not want any unauthorized reproductions of the IP created without their conscent. It's almost common knowledge in the digital realm. There have been several Computer Game modifactions with a Star Wars theme which were shut down with a Cease and Desist order from Lucas's army of lawyers.

Lucas has been taking heat from all this defending of IP and only recently has slackened their agressive style of shutting down the works of others.

I was under the impression that Lucas more or less let fan art alone, no? That as long as it wasn't sold or too blatant they turned a blind eye to it. Am I wrong?:?

Generally, you're right....Way back when, he met with Gene Rodenberry and Gene told him "If you leave the fans alone, they'll make you rich." or so the legend goes....If only more companys were like that....but then...we'd have all these lawyers out of work >sob!<
