Still don't have a place for a real layout and want to extend my E-Z track loop, but I'm confused about the pieces that come with the turnouts. What is the tiny, straight section used for? Thanks!

I think it matches the turnout up to a number of standard lengths of track or it spaces out a crossover to match a standard spacing.
I find that Mr. EZ gives petty poor explanations of what you can do with his track -- the 90 degree crossing has little bits as well, but no explanation of how you fit them in or build a figure 8.
