My first layout was on the wooden frame of a double bed we had in our garage. The train was a Hornby Dublo with an oval of track.
It was too many years ago to remember the date. It was fun though. My friends used to gather and one would touch one of the transformer connections, hold hands with the others till we had a circle then the end one touched the other transormer connection and we would all get a great BUZZZZZ
