Decoder Question

It's not rocket surgery
DCC systems are proprietary. For example, you cannot expand a Digitrax set with Lenz components.

HOWEVER, decoders that meet the NMRA standards (which is virtually all of them) can be used on any DCC system. In fact, some decoder makers do not make DCC systems at all (e.g. TCS. Soundtraxx). They should also be "interoperable" - i.e. even if programmed by one system, they should function on another.

Boosters and decoders are interchangeable (boosters need custom made adapter cables), but the throttles and command station must be of the same brand. Lenz and Atlas share Xpressnet (which is not a true peer to peer network BTW), and CVP radio throttles can use a base for NCE, Lenz or EasyDCC, but those are the exceptions to the rule.
