I usually make one of these each year for my railroad website... Need to get some new content for next year.

Christmas at McCormick based on a true story

Poetry has never been my strong suit and I've spent way too much time on this as is. I started to share a true story but this kind of took over and I got carried away....

Twas a couple weeks before Christmas, when all through the house,
my two boys were rough housing and one got clobbered in the mouth.
Their toys were scattered everywhere
and I and my wife sat exhausted in our chairs.
While visions of sleep danced in OUR heads,
I realized it would be quite a while before we made it to our beds.
(Mamma has no kerchief and I have no cap,
and if only there was such a thing as a long winters nap).
Inside the house, there arose such a clatter,
I sprang to my feet getting madder and madder!
Out, out, out, away we must go!
Let's get out and see some lights, a train, or a show!
Away to the garage we flew like a flash,
tore across town and over Thunderbird pass.
As we turned the final corner and into the parking lot,
a big cheer from the backseat is what mamma and I got,
when what to our wondering eyes should appear,
but a Baldwin 2-6-0 covered in lights and people everywhere.

My family was excited, this had done the trick,
but I knew from the growing crowds, we must be quick.
More rapid than eagles, his coursers we came,
I whistled and shouted and called my family by name,
"Now Conner, now Ian and my beautiful spouse,
leave the stroller behind, be quick as a mouse.
As we waited in line and then boarded the train,
my boys kept yelling, "All aboard, all aboard" over and over again.
and then in a twinkling, I heard on the track,
the clickety clack of each rail crack.
With a gondola full of boys, my wife and I too,
away down the rails our little train flew.
As I turned my head and looked around to the side,
through the Christmas lights we passed with a glide.
We were all dressed warmly from our head to our feet
and both my little ones thought this was way beyond neat.
Their eyes - how they twinkled! Their dimples - how merry!
Their cheeks were like roses and their noses like cherries.
The stump of chewed candy canes, they held tight in their teeth,
and the sugary remains encircled their mouths like a wreath.
I was happy and proud, a right jolly old dad,
for it had been a wonderful evening... a grand time we had had.
With a wink of my eye and a nod of my head,
my family now knew it was time to go home and to bed.
The children were finally nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of trains chugged in their heads.
As I left their room and turned out the light,
I whispered to each one, "Merry Christmas and good night!"

We got the tree up last night and this a.m. I put the train around it. Still have to break out the surge protector. Ease of turning on and off.

The whimsical trawler Annabelle visits the riverside town of West Mill to brighten up the holidays. A couple of vestibule coaches in the background are getting ready for a Christmas time fan trip.
