    The C628 (Century 628) was built by Alco in the 1960s. When it was introduced, it was the most powerful single-prime-mover engine available. It also introduced transistorized throttles.

    The C628 can be distinguished from other 6-axle Alcos by its very smooth, clean long hood. All C628s had Alco trimount trucks. Phase I C628s had rain shields over the intakes behind the cab, which later phases did not. Phase III C628s were only made for Mexico. They can be distinguished by the cab front, which is not angled across the whole width, but only above the nose.
