The C44-9W (Dash 9-44CW, CW44-9) is the most successful third- or fourth-generation diesel locomotive. The majority of units are owned by BNSF.

The easiest way to tell a C44-9W from a C40-8W/C41-8W or C44-8W is the trucks. C44-9Ws have the high-adhesion truck. There are also many detail differences between individual C44-9Ws. One of the more obvious is the front windows: some units have rectangular windows, others have windows that follow the shape of the nose.

CN's and BCR's first C44-9Ws were in fact C44-9WLs, with a Canadian widecab instead of the standard GE widecab. Both later ordered regular C44-9Ws. 5'3" gauge C44-9WMs were built for export, some with cab-mounted headlights like C40-9Ws.
