The C44-8W was a transitional locomotive between the C40-8W and the C44-9W. It was only ordered by CSX. Confusingly, they (re)designated these engines CW44-9s, which they are clearly not.

The C44-8W has trucks like a C40-8W but the radiators of a C44-9W.
