This is Jiro’s birdplane from Miyazaki latest film The Wind Rises. The film about Mitsubishi Zero fighter designer Jiro Horikoshi fictionalized childhood to young audit life. By the way, The Wind Rises is Miyazaki last film before he goes into retirement, but he still going to do maga, though.
I got everything roughed out but the cockpit and I’m still looking for detail reference. The 1/48 scale plastic model kit and the “Art Of” book didn’t offer me much at all in cockpit detail and so is the storyboards art book, but at least they are great art works. Looks like I’ll just have to make the best from the plastic kit and with what little reference the art books offer. One thing came into mind was the birdplane didn’t have landing skid, but looking at the storyboards it showed why. Since it didn’t have landing skid, I am going to build the launch platform too to display the plane just like the plastic kit. More work but it will looks nice, I hope. … if I actually get it done.
