    Varathane now make a water-based acrylic finish for wood in gloss, semi-gloss and satin which ought to have similar properties.

    Acrylic varnish, diluted slightly with distilled water /methyl hydrate and a bit of flow medium (or detergent, as a wetting agent) ought to work just as well. I am going to have to try this out and report!
