I was reading a book (early Christmas present) of Sci-Fi Christmas stories when I came upon a poem by John M. Ford called Winter Solstice, Camelot Station, and immediately thought of the Gauge. It was a bit too long to copy out here, plus there's all of the copyright mumbo-jumbo but I did some searching and found it online.
