Slot Cars
Racing slot cars is now the all-time favorite of hobbyists who prefer the
intricate workings and design of miniature cars and tracks rather than race a
full-size car. This fascinating hobby did not only attract kids but also
grown-up men and provided a bonding activity for families and friends. It also
became an avenue to meet new friends who are into the same hobby. Organizations
of slot cars fanatics were formed. Regular events and tournaments have been
formed and staged so as to know who got the best and fastest slot car among the
participants.
Like any other hobby, one has to spend for it. To get started immediately, one
can opt to buy a slot car race package. A package contains all the necessary
parts. The chassis, tires, controller, power supply, axle, transformers,
sidewinder and bushings are some of the parts of a slot car. Equally expensive
and important are the tracks which depend on how much one can afford to spend on
the hobby. Additional tracks, car parts and accessories can be purchased if one
plans to construct a larger system.
The design of slot cars had advanced in recent years that one can now enjoy
remotely controlled systems. With the use of a remote control, slot cars can now
change lanes, pass and block. The more popular brands of parts and accessories
for slot cars include Carrera, Ninco, Scalextrix and SCX. Each brand has its own
feature that a hobbyist should be well-aware of.
Carrera slot car parts and accessories which are widely distributed and used in
Europe are made of smooth but sturdy, hard plastic. Bank supports are solid and
excellent. Although not flexible, hobbyists who prefer the oval-shaped NASCAR
race track would opt for this one. The Ninco brand of slot car track is made of
high quality flexible vinyl. The colorful tracks make it one of the favorites of
slot car racers. The high magnetic pull of its metal contacts is best for fast
turning action. Scalextric is the largest and oldest company that produces slot
car racing products. Its simple track design makes it easier to set-up than the
others. SCX is the seond oldest manufacturer. With the narrower SCX slot car
tracks, a longer track system can be set-up in a smaller space.
Aside from the remote controlled features of slot cars today, the bodies of slot
cars have been toughen and hardened using plastic. This minimizes breakage
during crash, swapping, assembling and disassembling of parts. The four-wheel
drive which was previously a feature for real cars alone had been incorporated
with the design.
Whether it is 1/32 or 1/24, hobbyists would want their slot cars to be ultra
fast, stylish and modern. These are the features that make slot car racing an
exciting hobby for everybody.
