Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

Carrying on with the engine. All of the lifters have been installed... whew  A bit fuzzy but this picture shows a close up of using the tweezers for installing the plugs. All of the plug holes needed to be drilled out to 1/16". This thread is used for the spark plug wires...

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

Okay, here we go with the continuation of the engine build. There are 9 cylinders for the Clerget 9B rotary engine. The Britannia castings are generally okay but do have flashing that has to be removed. I use a #11 X-Acto knife, brass brushes on the Dremel, and needle files. The castings...

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

Yes, they do make separate kits for each of the engines which is really nice! They just added an SE5a to their product line of the same scale. I too have very limited space and am concerned about where I will put it when its completed, but where there's a will, there's a way :):iagree:

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

That's a great idea! I wish I was more experienced with Pepakura or some other software that could be used to design the engine. I guess I could scratch build it from paper cylinders, cocktail sticks, and the like? It seems like in the Camel it, the propellor and engine is fixed but that...

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

I did a search online and came up with this Red Baron

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

I believe you are correct. I saw mention that it was actually ground fire that brought the Baron's plane down. I want that book you mentioned for sure as I plan on building the Red Baron's Fokker DR1 in the future.:toast:

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

The engine is quite a complex beast for sure. I'm inundated with inlet, and exhaust manifolds, pistons, crankcase and spark plugs amongst a lot of other stuff. I like it because it forces an understanding of how the engine works. :)

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

Hi Micah! Great to hear from you guys! I've ever rigged an airplane before, and this does look complex for sure. :)

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

Yes, but it is an exciting model to build. I hope this guide would help another person if they wanted to give it a try.

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

I would say that it would help to have modelling experience for sure but with a good guide that can help towards succeeding. The manufacturer does offer to replace parts though for any reason, so that is reassurance.

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

Yes, your right. Will have to see how it goes for sure!

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

The castings have to be all cleaned up in Windex or other glass cleaner that has ammonia. I have the Windex on the left, and the fresh rinse water on the right. A soft toothbrush works nice to help remove the release agent. Step 1 is building the engine and propellor...

Sopwith Camel F.1 - (Wood and Metal kit)

Hi everybody ;) I have decided to have a go at building something a little different. It's the Model Airways Sopwith Camel F.1 I chose this model because it looks like it will be challenging. It's made from wood and metal, which will be different from what I am used to which is paper and...

    Pink Panthermobile - Build thread

These are photos of the model I designed and built in Maya. The driver seat was only big enough for a slim person or child to drive as there was so little room available. The "software" model has all the controls for the clam doors to lift...

    Pink Panthermobile - Build thread

That would have been awesome to see! I heard that they used solenoids to operate the steering at one point? Then they had a driver sit behind the actual drivers position and operated a steering wheel that was through a cable and pulley system. The original driver was blind for the most part...

    Pink Panthermobile - Build thread

They don't come much odder than the Pink Panther for sure! The same guy that designed the old Batmobile and a bunch of other vehicles. Yes, I truly think that this would make a GREAT project for sure, made from paper/card or whatever it took.

Yup, the car still survives! It was recently completely restored to better than new in 2016. Here is the original Pink Panther introduction video

    Pink Panthermobile - Build thread

These photos are of the real car that exists currently. I think its now owned by Jay Leno? I do have some photos of the model car that was available back in the day around 1960 or so. There was one kit available on eBay recently and it sold for an extortionate amount like $160 or so. Here are...

uhu02's Colonial Viper MKII- Build Thread

You bring up a good point regarding printer ink quality. For this model, the Viper, I thought buying the model pre-printed from eBay would be a good way to go but, I am disappointed by the quality of the ink that they used, and the paper. I would not recommend it for anyone. Its far better to...
