Track cleaning, Linn Westcott, and No-Ox

I got a giant toothpaste-tube of the stuff a while back, so far so good, i applied pea-sized amounts with a rag after cleaning the rails and all i've had to do so far is wipe off the normal dust that happens in a basement.

How to make a realistic ground pattern?

Ahhh, building hills and such. Foam is nice if you have access to a hot wire and surform tool but a sharp boxcutter and wood rasp will work too (get a shop vac too, the shavings can get all over!). This is what i do as a base for scenery in general, cut out layers of 1/2" to 1 1/2" foam like a...

Eastern Tn logging on the DG CC & W RR 1928

Bill, to clean those cedar shake roofs of dust try some canned air stuff you get at computer/electronic supply places. Or regular compressed air at low PSI. Blow straight down on the roof very gently and it should clean out nicely, even comes with a little straw like WD40 to get in the fine...

How to make a realistic ground pattern?

I use sifted sand as a base for ground foam, if you'd like a lot of tufts of grass that stick up a "static grass applicator" might be just the thing. Search for "Military model dioramas", there's a lot of info out there for just what you're doing. They use a lot of the same techniques though...

    Ballast spreader

That's ingenious, but the ballast is still too close to the railhead for my comfort. Perhaps a few tiny brushes to get the rock off the sides of the rail. The reason for this is that i've pulled more than one bit of ballast out of mine and friend's loco gears, not fun.

    Ordering finished models online?

That sounds like something the People's Republic would've done years ago, lol. A cursory search on Google reveals nothing, but in Soviet China... As far as selling pre-weathered models? Uffda. I'm on the fence about that one, because unless you offer 2-3 different weathering schemes (rusty and...

    wire sizes and dcc

Serial as in like USB cables? These might work ok for short feeder connections down to the bus from the track but your main power bus should be 16 or 14 AWG stranded wire or better. I use 14 awg speaker wire on my stuff.

    Painting Scenery

Cheap artists acrylics that can be mixed/diluted with water work well for some wood and most cast plaster stuff. :thumb:
