Van Hobbies brass CNR N-5-d 2-8-0 rebuild

The next couple of pictures show the very bright headlight I installed as well as the Soundtraxx tsunami sound decoder setup in the tender. The headlight is a micro golden white LED. It actually fits inside the brass headlight casting. I have added a clear lens over it. The headlight is very...

Van Hobbies brass CNR N-5-d 2-8-0 rebuild

A few more pictures. I ddecided to change my methos of running the wires to the tender. I endd up making a small hole in the front of the tender shell. The new method makes it a lot easier to seperate the tender when needed. WR

Van Hobbies brass CNR N-5-d 2-8-0 rebuild

Well I finally have some finished pictures of my N-5-d project. Bear with me if some are a little bit out od focus or a little too dark. I got a new camera for Xmas and I am still trying to learn all the bells & whistles as well as adjust the white blance for my room lighting. For the most...

Rolling stock update (with LOTS of BIG pictures)...

Wayne I have some Accurail ones I have also been thinking of doing as well even though as you say they are not 100% correct. I got all the Intermountain cars for a really good price and seeing as some of the CNR 40', 10'6" tall cars had 4/4 ends the Intermountain cars will be close. I cannot...

Rolling stock update (with LOTS of BIG pictures)...

Great looking freight cars.:thumb: Most of all the Canadian National ones. Seeing as I am modeling the CNR in the late 1950's any CNR cars catch my attention. I have 45 undecorated Intermountain 40' modified boxcar kits waiting to be built, painted and decaled. I also have a number of Tichy...

    Hmmmmm.....

I have not been here all that long but it is a shame to see all the good people going like they are. It is clear there is something to it. It seems to have something to do with Crowdgatherers from what I see.:confused::confused: Most of all since a number of people are leaving at the...

Glad to be of help. To fix the headlight all you sould have to do is unplug the two black wires behind the smokebox front from the small circuit board they plug into. No need to take the locomotive apart to do so. Then wire your new headlight bulb to the two plugs and plug them back in...

The boiler shell can be real stubborn to remove. When I stripped down mine for repairs I was afraid each time something would break as I removed the upper boiler shell. In the end they all came off with a little bit of verbal coaxing.  I do not have one of mine in front of me...

I know I wil be glad when I can take the final pictures and know the locomotive and tender are ready for use. If I would have known a small thing like some missing Fuel Oil lettering would hold things up for so long I would have held off posting until it was done. wall1 To top it off the...

If I remember right the price was around $150 to $175 US ( street price ) when they first come out. I have seen new in the box ones sell on E-bay for around $60 to $100 US in the last few months. I bought 6 of them off E-bay last year in three groups of two. I paid a little over $90 Cdn for...

    ebay selling....

I for one use E-bay as little as possible for selling now. The fees have gotten to be way to much and now with the Paypal only thing it has become a pain. The paypal only thing is just another way of getting another fee from a seller. This thing about it being safer is nothing but a smoke...

    most accurate track code

I would think code 83 rail would be the close to modern mainline rail in size. Code 81 might be closer but it is hard to find. Central Valley used to sell code 81 rail as I bought five 99 foot bundles a couple of years back but I see it is no longer listed on their web site. To bad as it worked...

Van Hobbies brass CNR N-5-d 2-8-0 rebuild

I thought I had better give an update on my N-5-d rebuild for all those awaiting the pictures of the finished locomotive. I hope to have some pictures to post soon. The drive has been reassembled and tested. I just need to do the final clear coats on the boiler and tender shell then...

    Proto 2000 Loco Help.

I used to have a fair number of Proto 2000 locomotives in the CN black, red & white scheme before I switched to modeling CN steam. I had a few that did the same thing when the gears were replaced. I would check for the things Doctorwaye suggested first. If that does not help you may have to do as...

Charlie I never even thought about HEP electrical power when I was writing my reply. When it comes to modern passenger equipement my knowledge is a little rusty.  I am so used to the old equipement seen around here that is stem heated I tend to forget things have advanced a lot...

Charlie They normally use the new SD75Is for head end power on the Santa Express. Sometimes they use the SD40-2s but not very often. The second unit you see is a converted FB unit that has been modified to be a steam generator to supply steam to the passenger cars for heating. Pictured below...

    Weekly photo fun 10/31/08

A couple of pictures on Ontario Northland ( ONRail ) power. I took these last year. SD40-2s #1737, #1735 & #1734. The lead unit #1737 is still in the old colors. It is looking a little worn and tired. Hopefully it will get repainted soon. All three units were built in 1973-74 and still are...

Van Hobbies brass CNR N-5-d 2-8-0 rebuild

That is one of the reasons I decided to do a test fit. I would like to change the color of the smokebox and firebox a bit so I have decided I will give them a spray of some very diluted weathered black and a touch of tarnished black. Just enough to change the color ever so slightly and give them...

Van Hobbies brass CNR N-5-d 2-8-0 rebuild

Well I hope to be assembling the drive train tonight but it will now be this weekend before I can get to it. I read about a neat trick to help keep the paint on the side rods and valve gear from wearing off when the locomotive is handled. I do not plan to handle it a lot but decided to try it...
