Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

Remember, it just slides in. I haven't looked that close to the position of the container in Sigma 7 but I will now. Its very possible its just slid up a little making it look as such. You can leave yours like it is, I'm just trying to clarify the design/intent. I'll dig through some photos...

Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

The drawing you posted gets it right. The container is deeper than you built. The photo you show is deceiving. The lower part of the container overlaps the divider walls by less than an inch. Here are some more photos. Hope they help. A few are from Mike at heroicrelics.org and a few are taken...

Paul's Heatshield and Retro Pack look Awesome! I believe the original heatshield was the brownish color that the adapter ring is. Its hard to find original color photos but it was made from the same stuff. Although Capsule 7, the one you appear to be modeling, used a beryllium heatshield. No...

The dimples were only on one side so to speak...It was actually two sheets welded together. The outer side was a dimpled sheet and the inner side was smooth. Thus the appearance of dimples on one side. So my printed sides look right; dimples outside, smooth inside. As a side note, when the...

I love discussion boards. I always get enlightened. Hopefully others do too... I merely thought that "absolutely cannot..." was a bit harsh. The glass is either half-full or half-empty. I always prefer to see words of encouragement instead of discouragement. Maybe something like "That...

Model of the Week: Another 1/4 scale Merc..the journey begins

Here is a photo I took of SN5 just a few weeks ago. Its purpose was to do exactly what you are doing, verify the periscope position. I was also going to use it to finish scaling some of the brackets that are not usually seen. The CAD file is just a quick screen dump with a bunch of layers turned...

Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

Plus the roughly 150 little vertical ones on the 'left' side of each shingle.... I have cut a few out and done the same thing to try it. If its any consolation, I spent WAY more time researching, designing, modeling, drawing, converting, etc than you will making them....

Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

We may be able to do more than one dimple at a time but I can't help think about weight. Its more work to do them individually but it makes sence from a shape standpoint and for weight. I'll grab some blackk posterboard this afternoon and do one by hand to see how it comes out. I need to run now...

Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

At first I thought you were crazy...But the idea is growing on me...My wife laughed. I told her it would be fun and I could probably whip it out in just a few weeks...I could add the plastic shingles or make some new ones from paper (black posterboard). I could make it in pieces (you mentioned...

You are not hijacking 'my' thread. Its everyone's thread. Paul (PaperAir) started a new thread for his full scale build. This was a good move as he will face different challenges. For example, he will need to make support pieces from scratch. He already has done a great job modifying the...

Awesome work Closet! Closet seems a little impersonal...What is your first name? I think it makes sense to post your build on the other thread? There were a few other builders that posted there and it will be easier for new people to follow along instead of jumping around. Paul started a new...

Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

The Periscope was a navigation aid. It was used to determine attitudes in orbit such as normal orbit, retrograde, and earth vertical. It could also be used to compute altitude, drift, and speed. It was very heavy and was deleted in later missions. The astronauts decided the new window and a new...

Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

Its just a flat aircraft gray. You could probably search the net for some paint colors. Every aircraft cockpit was painted that color in those days. Here are a few photos. The first two are Freedom 7 (S/N 7). the middle one is from #10. The last two are from #5 (Ham's) Remember it was half...

I'll try to put together a quick instructional video tomorrow. I am taking the day off work for medical reasons so I should be able to do this. Hopefully my site will be back up and I will post it. I think a 1 minute video will solve all your problems. Scott Respond back over at the other...

With dhanners permission, I could post a few photos with a ruler next to his Gemini Model. I was fortunate enough to be the one to buy it! Its one of the few models in my collection that I didn't build but I am very proud to own it! lancer525, that mercury thing could take a while. How is it...
