    That's it for now.

    Dune - Atreides Ornithopter 1:48

The tiered seating in the interior has something to do with IMAX requirements, but they didn't say why. The first image was on screen when the designer said the wingspan was 129 feet, but the full wingspan only exists in CGI.

    Dune - Atreides Ornithopter 1:48

I will take a thumbs up from an admin as encouragement. The first image here seems to be another angle on the prop seen above. The next two look like high quality pre-production artwork. The circular mounting points for the wing actuators on the interior stretch credulity, but it's still cool..

    Dune - Atreides Ornithopter 1:48

How about some pictures from that mini-documentary on the making of the ornithopters? I've got more, but I've been away from the board for a while, and don't want to give any offense unknowingly. Bigpetr can message me directly if he needs any snapshots from the film.

    Dune - Atreides Ornithopter 1:48

I just saw an interview with "Dune" production designer Patrice Vermette. Speaking specifically of the Atreides ornithopter prop, it was 75 feet long, with a wingspan of 129 feet. The prop weighed 11 tons.

    Dune - Atreides Ornithopter 1:48

It all goes by fast but it's clear there are at least two ornithopter designs in the film. Paul and Jessica escape from a research station in a small, two-seat ornithopter with only 4 wings, a bit more like a dragonfly. I'm not a designer, but I think I could modify an existing helicopter...

    Uhu02 Discovery Disaster! Help!!

Good luck with this. When I built it, things went pretty well until the part where I had to make lots of little hex nuts to hold the pods along the spine. I briefly lost the will to live and had to set it aside for a while. Slow and steady will win the day.

Discovery and a lesson in humility

Uhu is well known to the modelers I spoke to there, as well as the new LM-17, despite the fact that these same people generally favored resin or plastic as their medium of choice. Some of these fellows design, fabricate, and sell plastic model kits, and they recognize a kindred spirit there. I...

Discovery and a lesson in humility

If there's any mods listening, sorry, I think I got this in the wrong category. Moved to "Off Topic" section. :)

Discovery and a lesson in humility

I didn't want to wake up a dead thread, but I had a thread here when I started Uhu's Discovery in 2009. After crafting a bunch of paper hex nuts I stalled out. Still, the decorated dowel mocked me from my model room, and this April I set to it with a will, assembling cargo pods, and then...

    Moekami's new model

People once laughed at me for building a Japanese girl figurine with underpants under her skirt. I wouldn't have that problem with this model.

    Jays B5 Station Build

Maverick, that model looks much better than I thought it would, based on looking at the part sheets.

    Dust Tactics

I've heard of the "dust defense." Somebody once proposed placing large nuclear weapons under, let's say, Montana or Manitoba or some other sparsely populated big place up north, and then exploding them in the event of Soviet nuclear attack. All the dust kicked up into the upper atmosphere...

    How to Prevent Fading?

The fading of dyes is largely a photochemical process. To a good approximation, the fading effect is proportional to the intensity of the light multiplied by the duration of the light. So the first thing is to keep your dyed paper out of direct sunlight (which also has a lot of UV, which is...

    Louisville, KY Wonderfest

Wonderfest is a model show in Louisville, KY this weekend, emphasizing science fiction and fantasy, especially movie and TV subjects. It is very different from IPMS shows (no knock on IPMS shows). In addition to the model competition, it has a great dealer room and a full slate of guest...

Plastic Model Cars Magazine Forum Accepts my models

Plastic modelers come in all types. Many of us model in plastic, and one of the members here was once the national president of the International Plastic Modeling Society-USA. People who reject paper out of hand are much rarer than they used to be, since even "plastic" kits are so often...

    What happened to 3dpaper--A theory

I know some of us still mourn the apparent demise of 3dpaper, the Korean supplier of paper models that were beautifully printed, pre-scored and perforated for easy part removal. I just got back from two weeks in Korea, and found numerous bookstores, stationery stores, and even a few hobby...
