    northlandz

I've been there and I would recommend it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. The scenery is pretty spectacular, although the trains just go around the mountains in circles.

Maximum grade before cars begin to roll

Thanks for the valuable info. I think I'll try the monofilament trick, but it may be a while since I haven't gotten any track laid on my layout yet.

Maximum grade before cars begin to roll

Thanks guys, I'm planning my layout and I wasn't sure if I could put a siding on a really slight grade. Looks like I should keep it on the level.

Maximum grade before cars begin to roll

What is the maximum grade that you can leave uncoupled cars on before they will begin to roll? Some of my cars have free-rolling trucks.

    Amtrak superliner radius curves

I don't know the size of your layout, but you can fit a 22" radius oval into a 4x8.

    XTrkCad download has moved

Thanks for the update. I've tested the new build, and it works great in Windows Vista, if you're fortunate enough to be using that.

    special effects experiment

I hope I'm not too off subject here, but the reason there are so many search results for ".NET framework problems" is that just about everybody is using it and it's on almost every computer nowadays. I've never had any problems with it. It does, however, require Windows 2000 or later, but you...

    special effects experiment

I LOVE that pic of #5626! It would make a great desktop wallpaper... so would all of them. Another totally FREE program that you can use is paint.NET. You can download it from http://getpaint.net/. Not only can you crop photos, but you can do all kinds of stuff like adjust brightness, color...

To build a new layout or rebuild the old one?

I am definitely going to be using DCC on anything that I do. And I did manage to pick up Ian's book at a train show last year. Thanks everyone for the advice, I appreciate it! I'll post some pictures as soon as I start.

To build a new layout or rebuild the old one?

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've thought of integrating the 4x8 into the larger one later, but that would take up even more space later that I don't have. I'd like it to be a father-son project, but dad at this point doesn't have the spare time. Although I'm 20 and don't have a family of...

To build a new layout or rebuild the old one?

You're right, it is small and complicated, but that's why I like it. It has an open island in the center accessable by a lift-out section, and since I'm only 20 I don't expect to be bothered by that for quite some time.:) I expect to have it against a wall on two sides. But I might just shelve...

    Dremel Stylus

I just bought one of the corded models with the flex shaft. I think that would offer even greater control over the stylus because you're not holding the weight of the motor and battery in your hand. Plus you can use it without the flex shaft for larger projects around the house.

To build a new layout or rebuild the old one?

Yes, I'm thinking I should gain some experience before I tackle such a large project. I'd like to keep the 4x8 shape on the layout I have now because the table is already built. Does anyone have links to a 4x8 plan that has a lot of operational possibilities?

To build a new layout or rebuild the old one?

Okay, here's my dilemma: I have a 4x8 layout that is partially completed. The track is laid but there is no scenery. I built it with my Dad when I was around 7 or 8 (actually he built it and I tried to help). We never took the time to complete it and now I want to get back into model railroading...

    Testing train in DC

You don't need to worry about getting shocked at that low voltage. You should be fine taking the wires from your old DC power pack directly to the loco's wheels or to the track that the loco is on. However, if you connect the DC pack temporarily to your layout you should probably disconnect your...

    Found this and thought others....

Works for me. You may need to upgrade the Java software on your computer if you're having problems with it.

So, what does your wife think?

I'm 20 and single, so I can do what I want. I just hope that if/when I get married my wife won't mind me being a total train nut.

    Breaking in locos

Thanks for the replies guys. I have a 4x8 layout leftover from years ago that Dad and I never completed the scenery on. I'm using that to break in my locos while I dream about and plan my own real layout. After running them for about an hour each, my Spectrum F40PH and Athearn AMD-103 are much...
