Like a rat from a sinking ship

Seeing the turmoil, and the resignation of the only authority figures that have earned my respect, I too am moving on. It has been a good time here, but that is coming to an end. I am off to bluer skies.

Bowser USRA Lt Mikado, Deluxe Kit (Lord help me)

Well, it came today. Whomever it was who said that it was not a "Shake the box" kit was not pulling my leg. However, after looking over the instructions carefully, I can do this fairly easily. It will take some time, and I know I will run across a few hang ups. Whoever said that the valve gear...

    Bowser Deluxe Kits?

Does anyone have any experience with these? I am looking at buying a Lt. Pacific deluxe kit from Standard Hobby, but before I sink my money into it, I want to know from an uninterested third party how they are? Are they easily convertable to DCC with sound? Are they easily assembled? Are the...

    New Assistant Yardmaster

The PM has hired a new assistant yardmaster. She is a 10 week old American Bulldog. Her name is Sofie. My daughter picked the name. She seems to be settling in nicely, and is making a great addition to the team. Matt

What type of road bed do you use?

I have heard pros and cons about the major ones... What type to do you use? If you use multiple forms, you can select more than one option. I only ask that you elaborate. Experience is the best educator. I have used cork in the past, and found that it dried out and began to crumble over time.

Track planning using prototype track charts?

Has anyone here done this before? I am going to, after I figure out what falls in the name of compression. Matt

    An Update

on the 7th, I had the 1st of several surgeries to repair wy wrists, just a carpal tunnel release. According to the doc it went well. I don't recall much (fentanyl and versed (sp?)) will do that. I am without the benefit of my right hand for a bit. Next comes therapy, then surgery on my left...

    over-reaction

I over-reacted to Squidbait's reply. I will offer no excuses, except to say that I have had a full plate as of late. I want to apologize to Squidbat first. You describe yourself as a "curmudgeon", but you had never been rude to me before. I do still find your response to be a bit rude, but...

Could someone point me in the direction of the exit?

This is to be my last post/visit to the guage. I used to sing praises about this forum, and the great people here. While it is true, there are a bunch of great people here, there are also a bunch that are not so great. I don't know what I did to piss in everyone's cheerios, but if one of the...

    Michigan Coal and Salt Mining??

I know that there is/was a large amount of both in the Mid-Michigan region. Does anyone know of a FREE resource that would supply me with more information so I can add it to my layout? It would appear that Pere Marquette, in addition to several other non-railroad ventures, owned a few, and...

    MRC "Sounder" Install??

I picked up a couple of the MRC sound only decoders to put into my bachmann spectrum steam engines. Has anyone installed these before? Has anyone programmed them before? Should I just get rid of them before I open the package? Matt

    The Mother Lode

My Father-In-Law is an avid model builder. He loves building railroad models, but not a model railroad. He switched from HO to HOn3 and during his last visit he brought me a bunch (about 15) of HO craftsman kits. They are all older kits, and most of them do not match my era or region. He...

    Bachmann Spectrum consolidation issue

I have one of these little gems. It has seen some rough handling, but before it was put away it was running fine. Now when it is placed on clean, powered rail it does not run, the lamp does not light. If I try to push it the lamp will try to come on. Any suggestions as to where I should start...

    Anyone up for a challenge?

I need some assistance. My permanent layout plans are on hold. My wife and I are looking at a move in the near future and I don't want to get too tied up in my permanent layout. I was wondering if someone could bang out a waterfront switching plan for a 4'x13' space. It is already built...

    City Scene

I am trying to figure out how to either elevate my mainline above grade or place it below grade to make a decent city scene. Can anyone offer some suggestions? I have been looking at alot of other people's layouts and I really like the look of the downtown railroad. Maybe I will drive into...

    Matching Decoder to Loco??

Does anyone know of a website or internet accessible database for matching decoders to locos? I know there are a few websites that have small samplings such as the Gateway website. Thanks, Matt

    trainworld.com??

Has anyone done business with them? If so, how would you rate them? Their last ad showed HO Berkshires starting at $89. I want to know what I am getting into before I throw money at them. Thanks, Matt

    MMRy Progress

My official guide to changing my mind over and over again Some of you may already know that I am building a temporary layout. It is not going to much more than a "plywood central". I will work on some structures for it, but most will be cardboard boxes. After surgery and recovery I will shift...

    GERN help needed

I am trying to decide how to put GERN together on my layout. I have a 4x13' area (with the main line running around the outside in a loop) that is going to be GERN and GERN alone (so it has to be good sign1). I have already determined that it will have it's own power generation so I will need a...

    Turnout assistance needed??!!

So I am laying down a bit of track, just a temporary layout until after surgery, et al. I am having a problem with an Atlas Custom line #4 LH turnout. When any of my rolling stock or 6 of my 8 locos are traveling through in the trailing point direction (never in the facing point), on the through...
