    Walthers & wood structure kits...

Do you buy wood structure kits direct from Walthers? If you do, I would really like to recommend that you patronize your local hobby shop, instead. (If you don't have a LHS, please find someone else to buy from (wink)). Walthers has been moving aggressively into the retail market, while they...

    Prodigy Wireless

MRC has announced a wireless version of Prodigy. They are trying to imply that it's better than DigiTrax because it supports "duplex control", which is what NCE supports. I've never been that impressed with NCE's implementation. I find it totally unreliable. I wonder if MRC will be able to...

Machine Shop by Cigarbox Studios (HO)

Rick, how's the layout coming along? Thanks to everyone who posted... but no, I do not mass produce these little gems! :D

    Sculptamold question?

Did anybody see the "rosin paper scenery" technique in the 1/07 RMC? This could make all other techniques kind of obsolete...

    Sculptamold question?

If you use 2 layers of the plaster cloth, it should be strong enough that you don't need another layer on top of it. However, Sculptamold looks great to fill in areas around rock castings! Because it has plaster in it, it also takes stain very well, and can even look like rock when colored.

    Help!

AMI Roadbed Yeah, and so does everything else... like dust and dirt! I'll never use the product again. I don't mind a few track nails to hold the track in place while the ballast glue dries. You can always remove them, if you desire.

    Help!

Here is where a TOOL is a big help - MLR makes a parallel track laying tool (catalog #479-5002). Cork is available in sheets that can be used for yards or dual mainline. 357-1518 by Itty Bitty Lines is beveled like regular cork roadbed. You'll have to remove some of the inside of the sheet to...

    Help!

Now, there's a smart man - one who knows his limitations, but is willing to keep the door open for later on! Congratulations - I think you made the right decision for your circumstances! :D

    Help!

That it is! Hand-laid track looks great, and may not be too difficult - just time-consuming. What you really have to wonder about though, is turnouts. If you hand-lay your track, stock turnouts will look too "manufactured" next to your track. And I'm SURE you won't want to hand-lay your turnouts! :D

    Modeling dirt roads

I've seen your work before! I've seen your photo, somewhere! Nice work, and now I remember about "Paver Sand"... I think you have an article on your website about it. Gonna visit there right now!

    Modeling dirt roads

Well, like I explained, it's not in the cards right now to go out to collect earth/sand. So, I'm hoping someone can tell me of a product available at the home center/hardware store that would do the job. BTW, what do you use to hold your mix down, and doesn't it turn it into mud?

Got my bridge in, but need some input!

Model the back end of a waterfall! The "dam" suggestion just made me think of a pretty cool solution - at the back wall, make the water look like it's going over "falls"! Then, when you get to painting the backdrop, all you need is to paint a small river in the distance! I'd remove some of the...

Got my bridge in, but need some input!

It seems like you want this section to be a real focal point, and you've got a great start to a really nice riverbed! I personally would recommend rock castings around your bridge abutments, but that might require you to cut back the base a bit. Then, I would remove the abutments and temporarily...

    Modeling dirt roads

In Dave Frary's latest scenery book, he recommends "baseball diamond dirt" for modeling dirt roads. Here in the midwest, we have rain and are expecting it to change to snow. So, I'm not really in the mood to hunt down a ball diamond. So, I was wondering if there is a commercially available...

    Help!

Track Planning Rick, Remember, you've already chosen your table. So, you're going to be restricted to what can fit on it. You can start with a book on the subject, and I recommend "The Classic Layout Designs of John Armstrong". No sense listening to anyone but the master of layout design...

    Help!

Yep - homemade is always the best! :D But seriously, there are tools available, but they're based on the same principle. My favorite was purchased from Micro-Mark. The pivot point is actually a retractable tape measure, and it includes a sharp metal piece (your nail), with a special holder at...
