    Sighting: Pie in the sky!!!

There were two pretty much certain attendees for the Owosso events this summer. There were a few more long shot options. None seemed like more of a long shot than the Daylight... http://www.trainfestival2009.com/ So we now have PM 1225, NKP 765, LR 110, the new 4-4-0, three 0-4-0ts, and the...

    Obscure video

I wanted to share an obscure video I found on youtube. It is an 1929 trip over the Colorado Midland/Midland Terminal. The CM was the first std gauge road to penetrate the Colorado Rockies. According to John Allen, it was the closest thing to a prototype the GD Line had. The MT was a std...

    Eastern Car Works Passenger Cars

I've asked this question on another forum with no replies...I've also seen that this was asked on here a few years ago...with no replies....but I'll try again. Does anyone have any experience with Eastern Car Works kits? I'm considering some HO passenger car projects, and was wondering if they...

    Passenger car building

I'm currently working on three passenger cars. I don't think I've shared them here as of yet. They are, as might be guessed, South Park cars. One is a baggage-express car and the others are coaches. The coaches were built by Barney and Smith in 1878 (and today I drove past what remains of...

    Childhood railfanning...

My dad sent me this today. It is my older brother and me at Bellevue, OH in 1984. The 765 and 611 double headed that day, on their way to an NRHS convention. Now, I'm far more likely to foam from the mouth rather than the eyes when in sight of steam. I was terrified of the low water alarm...

    A new model railroader...

...has arrived. I've started him off right with my favorite railroad picture: William Henry Jackson's 1884 masterpiece of the newly completed Georgetown Loop. In the foreground is the DSP&P Office Car...a close relative to my pay car...and seemingly a frequent visitor to the Colorado Central...

What era draws your attention the most?

I find that certain eras catch my attention more than others...several eras such as 1860s or 1900s really stand out on the rare occasion when I see one. It is worth noting that neither is an era that I'm interested in modeling...but I prefer to see it. How about everyone else?

    Gearing

I've assembled the frame (or at least ver 1.1) of my 2-8-0 project. Now I need to get it powered. I've decided on a coreless motor...haven't decided if it will be a Maxon or a Faulhaber...whatever I get a good deal on. (I am very well versed on the pros and cons of coreless motors and have NO...

    Jeweler's Saw

I picked up a jeweler's saw for $9 from the LHS today. When combined with my new vice...wow! It cuts through brass like a warm knife through butter! I wish I'd bought one before. It was a bajillion times better for cutting the holes in my 2-8-0's frame for the #2 and #3 drivers (the holes...

    New Mega Layout...

http://www.ohiotraveler.com/Venue%20Files/entertainment_junction.htm My dad told me about this. He learned about it from a friend whom delivered a full size, wooden mock up of a set of NYC 4-6-4's drivers. It will feature a 20,000+ sq ft large scale layout. It's a $10,000,000 deal.

What topic would you like to know more about?

So, what rail related topic are you currently most interested in learning about? A railroad, a particular branch, hardware (such as CTC or Baker valve gear), a class of locomotives, the economy of a region served by a railroad, or a particular station design? DCC? Coreless motors? The Delta...

    Oahu Railfanning

Recently I had a chance to visit the Hawaiian Railway Society in Ewa, HI. It is a 3' gauge line with a 4 steam locomotives, a few diesels, and probably around 15 cars. One of their steam engines, an 0-6-2t is currently being restored. I didn't get there in time to ride, but I did get their...

    Modern Marvels

I just discovered that last week the History Channel's show Modern Marvels did a piece on the Strassburg RR. Particularly interesting, the showed a locomotive in the shops...receiving a new driver tire. Although they don't say so in the clip, it's ex-Rio Grande Southern #20...one of the finest...

    $261 shipping!?!?!

I was just on ebay, and saw a recently listed HO Spectrum 2-6-6-2. I noticed it was in China...and then I noticed the shipping... $261! What a scam! The shipping was listed in the description only. I feel really sorry for anyone whom does bid on it...is that even legal under ebay's policy...

    Broad Gauge modeling

Today I was thinking...gee...45mm track (LGB track) scales out to 7'1" gauge in O scale...pretty close to the 7'.25" gauge used by the Great Western Railway of Britain prior to 1892. I did a little checking, and the wheels from Aristo Craft's 2-4-2 are 1.75" tall...the same as 1840's Firefly of...

    4x8 british branch line

Okay, I'm looking at possibly building a British branchline in the next couple of years. The wife and I will probably be having our first little one in that time frame. The layout will be a 4x8 foam affair. It will probably include a 22" radius mainline oval...for the pacifics...and a branch...

    Cog model railways

I've recently been checking into cog railway models...and not finding much. What I have found is a video on youtube of an "HOn3" rack & pinion setup consisting of a locomotive and a coach. There is a second video with a Thomas the Tank engine cog locomotive...both videos are Japanese. I've...

    Passenger car roof

I've been looking...without much success...to find different methods for building a passenger car roof (with clerestory). So far, I'm trying out a method I've thought up: The roof can be broken down into 3 assemblies: 1) the arched sides 2) the clerestory. For the car I'm building...the arch...

Kitbashing a Ye Olde Huff'n Puff reefer into a Tiffany reefer

For Christmas I received, among other things, a pair of Ye Olde Huff'n Puff On3 kits. One is a 30' wooden boxcar and the other is supposed to be one of the DSP&P's 1883 27' Tiffany refrigerator cars (cars built under license of the Tiffany patent). This kit has several problems: #1 the hinges...

On3 South Park freight car thread

I've decided to create a single, consolidated thread for all future DSP&P/CCRR/DL&G/UPD&G freight cars. For our 2nd anniversary (which is tomorrow), my wife bought me some scratch building supplies. So in the past couple days I've started a 26' flat car, a 27' gondola, and a 27' boxcar. I...
