A deities eye veiw of the soon to be Desolation & Eastern (AKA The learning curve)

S class, I can guarantee that your train will jump the rails in the worst possible spot. Happens all the time. (grin) Having an access hole as a backup is a great idea. I made my layout track no further then 2.2 feet from any edge for that reason. An access hole for me to get through...

Track - Atlas versus Peco or Micro Engineering

Rusty, Any track you use will have some challenge or another. The down sides I hear most about Atlas track is that that older large flange wheels will bump on the molded spike heads and that there have been some quality control issues with some of the switches. I hear Peco has switch issues as...

    Layout redesign

The nice thing about it is you can do what ever makes you happy! If your reason for the yard is to store trains, then make it as big as you like and don't worry about yard leads. Also, we can't be prototypical anyhow... these are models and 99.9% of us don't have the room to be proto with a...

    Layout redesign

Looks like an interesting design and should provide you a lot of switching. What is the purpose of the yard? Is it for storing tains or do you plan on switching in the yard? If you plan on using it for actually assembling and breaking down incoming trains, you might like to add a lead at...

    feeder wire question.......

Should be fine as long as you keep them short and have heavier buss wires. Wiring HO and N-Scale is petty much the same.

New to N scale...need some help please!

I have played with various spacing on various layouts and have come to settle on 1.25" in almost all cases. I sometimes go narrower on some locations, but even at 15" raidius 1.25" looks fine and causes no problems even with 85' cars. if your curves are tighter, you might want to run some...

    TBA Railway construction started!

Got side tracked when I realized my staging yard would might be a problem in the making with too many S curves I moved the switches to the other side and have the through tracks at the back. Mave the helix up two turns and now only need 1/2 more to be up to layout height and I can start...

    L-Girder Benchwork

I am building a large garage layout in n-scale and am using 1x4 capped with 1x3 L's and 2x2 legs and 1x2 joists. Joists span less then 2 feet and the L's sometimes span 6-8 feet. I am also using 1/2 birch ply for the sub roadbed. Works well for me.

    Garage Layout

on the subject of garage layouts... I am in the same situation and was wondering about positive presurization of the garage with some sort of exhaust fan working in reverse with a filter on the outside. My theory is that if you are pushing clean air in, then the dust and dirt will be blown out...

    Removing glued down flex track

Lay paper towels over the track and then pour water on them. Let them soak and keep them wet for a day or so.. keep checking and eventually the track will come up. This only works for elmers white glue.

    Shelf layout lighting

E-Paw, The lamp sockets are designed to hook onto insulated paired wire. There are not from lamps, but have a screw off back which crimps over the insulated wire. No wire stripping at all. Using Romex give me the advantage of extra insulation. There is no grounding at all, but then again...

    Shelf layout lighting

Let me put in another plug for my method of individual bulbs. You can easily add bulbs or lower or raise watts for a given area you want to highlight. If you are going flourescent anyway, are really flexable and cost competative.
